Buying a good violin in Brooklyn shouldn’t have to be complicated or out of reach.

Frustrated by the smoke and mirrors of the established violin trade, Brooklyn-based violinist Daniel Zinn sought out a simple, reliable way to help his friends and fellow local musicians find high quality instruments in a setting they could trust.

Brooklyn Violin Company (formerly bkln atelier) was founded on this goal, offering an unpretentious, transparent buying experience to let the excellence of the violin speak for itself.

With Model One, we’ve created a single, standardized option — handmade violins of significant quality for a reasonable price. Perfect for committed students looking to focus on playing the violin, not which violin to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why should I start with a violin at this price if I’m a beginner violinist?

Playing the violin is one of the most demanding things a person can do, and getting started can be intimidating with the many options you may be presented with. Even though violins at cheaper prices exist and are widely available, our violins will afford confidence in their high level of quality, allowing you to focus on the other challenges that come with learning to play the violin as a student.

  • Who makes your violins?

Brooklyn Violin Company (formerly bkln atelier) imports high quality handmade violins from our trade partner in China. The instruments go through their final setup in Brooklyn, where all aspects of the violin are examined, adjusted, and cleaned to make sure the violin you’ll receive is in optimal condition and sounds its best.

  • What kind of wood do you use?

Our violins are made from European spruce — the golden standard of violin-making wood. We believe any violin worth mentioning is made from this wood.

  • Where can I try out Model One?

While we’re working on expanding our sellers, Model One is currently stocked at Markus Laine Violins on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where you can try out and compare our violins. To make an appointment, you can email them at markuslaineviolins@gmail.com, or call +1 9176010858.
